As they say at the site - Northrop's Air Combat Fighter design was built in 1973-74.  This is YF-17 "Cobra" Number 1.  YF-17 "Cobra" Number 2 is at the US Naval Aviation Museum, Pensacola, Florida.  YF-17 "Cobra" Number 1 made its first flight at Edwards AFB on 9 June 1974 with Northrop Chief Test Pilot Hank Chouteau at the controls.  It went supersonic in level flight, without afterburner, on its second flight.  And this design became the F/A-18 of course.

Note the Sidewinder air-to-air missile on the end of the wing - produced by Hughes out in Pomona and then, later, in Tucson.  After leaving Northrop your editor worked for Hughes.  One gathers all sorts of useless information this way.
