Monday, July 14, 2008 – A New Square

Larry King Square, Sunset at Cahuenga, Hollywood

Hollywood had a new square.  On Thursday, July 10, 2008, at 2:00 in the afternoon, they had the dedication.  The intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Cahuenga Boulevard, one block west of Vine, is now Larry King Square.  King, that strange old man who has been interviewing people on television forever, and the voice of the Ugly Stepsister in the Shrek movies, does his show from CNN's Los Angeles Bureau – the big black skyscraper there on the southwest corner.  King, born in 1933 as Lawrence Harvey Zeiger, is a bit of a legend. He has his Emmy Awards and CNN’s highest-rated program, and was named "the most remarkable talk-show host on TV ever" by TV Guide and "master of the mike" by Time magazine.

Perhaps this was inevitable – this is Hollywood, after all.  But it is odd – he's not a celebrity, or a movie star, or a famous director. He just talks to them. But then, as you will see when you scroll down past the CNN pictures, everything around Larry King Square odd.

Just down the street is one of Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes from 1963 – originally the Cinerama Dome, the first place built to show films shot in the process. Now it's part of the Arclight Cinemas complex, and the geometry got even more complex.
