Monday, February 8, 2010 – Hollywood Tradition

Preparing for the premiere of Garry Marshall's "Valentine's Day" at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard on Monday, February 8, 2010

Things come full circle. Monday's "Major Motion Picture Premiere at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard" – which is what we do out here, as the theater opened May 18, 1927 with the premiere of Cecil B. DeMille's silent epic "The King of Kings" – is Garry Marshall's Valentine's Day. It's pretty basic – "Intertwining couples and singles in Los Angeles break-up and make-up based on the pressures and expectations of Valentine's Day." It seems a bit of an episodic ensemble vanity-production – easy work, cameos by all the big stars. Some of it was shot on location on Hollywood Boulevard last August. And if you document the start you might as well document the finish.

This is around noon – Hollywood Boulevard closed as the gaffers and grips and such are setting things up, and rolling out the red carpet and all. And the fans, hundreds of them, are gathering behind the barricades, as in a few hours the limos roll in, celebrities will wave to the crowd and do their interviews, and that will be that. There will probably be a lot of screaming. And it's odd that such things still happen, that people take all this seriously – but this happens all the time out here.
