Monday, November 3, 2008 – Hollywood Ritual

The hottest club in Hollywood may be Ritual – of course that's always a matter of dispute.  Ritual is right next to the bus station – where someone stole the silver greyhound, again – and just up the street from Western Union. If you're a sweet young thing and arrive on the bus from Nebraska just knowing you'll be discovered and become a big star, and now and then you need the folks back home to wire some money to you, and you want to been seen with Paris and Britney – it's all here in one block, Cahuenga and Hollywood Boulevard.

You might end up living here while you wait to be discovered – two blocks south, one block west, the Gilbert Hotel on Wilcox, at Selma –

Up on Hollywood Boulevard you'll learn the local value system –

Just stare at the nearby "You Are a Star" mural by Tom Suriya, and dream –

And remember the one rule –

"Say Yes" - sticker in alley, Hollywood

And get help looking just right –

And get a good agent –

Just keep your eyes open –

Doors may open for you –

Just remember the old Hollywood. In The Big Sleep Phillip Marlow had his office here, on the sixth floor, looking down on the bus station, where you started.

Security Pacific Bank Building, 1921, John and Donald B. Parkinson, 6381 Hollywood Boulevard, at Raymond Chandler Square - the model for the Cahuenga Building, where Chandler's cynical but observant detective, Philip Marlowe, leased an office on the sixth floor.

If you wish to use any of these photos for commercial purposes I assume you'll discuss that with me. And should you choose to download any of these images and use them invoking the "fair use" provisions of the Copyright Act of 1976, please provide credit, and, on the web, a link back this site.

Technical Note:

These photographs were taken with a Nikon D200 – the lenses used were AF-S Nikkor 18-70 mm 1:35-4.5G ED, or AF Nikkor 70-300 mm telephoto.  The high-resolution photography here was modified for web posting using Adobe Photoshop 7.0 software.
