Friday, September 26, 2008 – Filming in Venice

No, not the Venice in Italy – the one out here – Venice Beach, the center of all things so very LA – the sweet young things in tiny bikinis roller-skating by, the street vendors and strange musicians and fortune tellers, the body-builders and the basketball players just like in the opening of "White Men Can't Jump" – and for forever that bearded man in the turban, on roller-skates, strumming his guitar.  Actually, after a while, you get used to it – you just drop by now and then to be sure not much has changed.  It never changes.

That's why Venice Beach is where you go to film commercials and music videos.  This week it was a skateboard manufacturer, Razor. They had collected a bunch of absurdly cute kids, and their stage mothers, and were filming a commercial in the middle of everything.  You do that here, not in Cincinnati or Boise. Everyone wants to be in Venice Beach.

Nearby, a camera guy prepares to do the tracking shots for a music video – a Panasonic HD video camera and a modified Segway scooter thing. He wouldn't say what the video was, and the pretty girls who would later lip-sync on roller-skates were in make-up, and isolated – no one could get near them with a camera.  So we talked shop – lenses and stuff.  It was just another day out here.

Technical Note:

These photographs were taken with a Nikon D200 – the lenses used were AF-S Nikkor 18-70 mm 1:35-4.5G ED, or AF Nikkor 70-300 mm telephoto.  Photography here is modified for web posting using Adobe Photoshop 7.0 software.
