Monday, April 13, 2009 – From the Thirties

The El Rey was originally built in 1936 as a single-screen movie theater and functioned as a movie theater until the eighties, when it became a dance-music club called Wall Street – since 1994 it been a live music venue. On November 15, 2001, Mick Jagger premiered his new single here, ''God Gave Me Everything.'' Meg Ryan, Kate Hudson, Billy Crudup, David Spade and Naomi Campbell showed up for that. They’ve done Bob Dylan and Jackson Browne back-to-back, and Emmylou Harris did a benefit concert here a decade ago.

But the place has that streamline look of the Chrysler Building – it's New York in the thirties.
