Tuesday, April 21, 2009 – Heavenly Science

Hugo Ballin mural, Central Rotunda of the Griffith Park Observatory

On a hot day, the dark and cool Central Rotunda of the Griffith Park Observatory is the place to be, as the Hugo Ballin murals from 1934-35 have been restored. The ceiling mural is classical celestial mythology – images of Atlas, the four winds, the planets as gods, and the twelve constellations of the zodiac. The eight rectangular wall murals are the "Advancement of Science" – panels on astronomy, aeronautics, navigation, civil engineering, metallurgy and electricity, time, geology and biology, and mathematics and physics. It's a trip.
