Tuesday, April 20, 2010 – Regarding Realism

Mural behind a tattoo shop on the southwest corner of La Brea and Fountain, just south of Hollywood - Hyperrealism

Street art in LA seems to be in transition. The new thing may be hyperrealism. Sure, it's still political and social commentary, filled with the anger of the oppressed, or those who think they are oppressed, or who like to pretend they are. But there are many ways to express that, and the funky cartoonish symbolism – gangland color slashes meet vaguely R. Crumb surrealist characters, with bold text – may have run its course. Consider this new mural behind a tattoo shop on the southwest corner of La Brea and Fountain, just south of Hollywood. No words. No distortions. It gets the job done.

And the old style has been commercialized, assimilated by the marketing folks for their own purposes. This is the production house on La Brea where the Rug Rats cartoons were once produced.

Yep, ambitious new rock bands too…

And there's the opposite of anger, the Random Act flowers that pop up all over this side of Los Angeles.
