"Real Monsters" mural - Klasky-Csupo building, Highland at Fountain, Hollywood

Driving up Highland everyday you see this – the "Real Monsters" – on the south wall at the former headquarters of Klasky-Csupo.  That animation house has since moved north into the heart of Hollywood, so this building is just one of their secondary operations now – recording studios and such.  Of course Klasky-Csupo is an animation house – they produced the first three seasons of the Simpsons (now animated by Film Roman out in Valley Village) and then in 1991 began producing Rugrats for Nickelodeon, and its spinoff "Real Monsters" – thus this wall. It's a little disturbing when you're stuck in traffic, just trying to get home.

But then you understand. One of the founders is Gábor Csupó – bio here – a Hungarian who fled to the west in 1975 and ended up here in Hollywood.  Csupó is a big fan of Frank Zappa and says Zappa helped him learn English – when he hauled out of Hungary all he took with him was his collection of Zappa albums.  Maybe that explains something.  He just directed a live action film for Disney, Bridge to Terabithia – so maybe he had to just get these monsters out of his system.
