Thursday, December 18, 2008 – Santa Monica Angels

On Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica the local churches each have a display, a crèche of sorts, in a line of what seems to be construction trailers, each with one side open to the street, so as you drive by you can see one sort of diorama or another. But this is not medieval Europe – everything is behind chain link fencing, and there are security cameras here and there. And the figures are mostly discarded store manikins, seeming a bit ill at ease in these settings. The effect is unsettling.
