Thursday, May 21, 2009 Deadly Serious Art

The famous Frank Lloyd Wright 1921 Hollyhock House is just down Hollywood Boulevard as is the adjacent Barnsdall Art Park.  A walk around the grounds will remind you how you feel about serious sculpture these days.  Just outside the administration building with its Junior Art Center and ceramics studios, this just finished piece says it all

An appreciation for surreal ceramic art may be an acquired taste, as with the "Ceramic Tower"

You don't like ceramics? On the main plaza try Michael Todd's "Grand Ikebana I"

Or try "MCT 33"

Or "China Rings"

Okay, distressed once-molten metal may not be your thing. For you there are all the Heart Chairs scattered about.

Hey, anyone can be arty

The rather self-congratulatory mural on the south wall of the administration building, with Barnsdall Art Park smack in the middle

The kids are okay from 1995, a detail from "Contemporary Cave Painting" done by the kids at that summer's Junior Arts Camp

But in general
