Thursday, July 29, 2010 – Big Hollywood

Spa Luce mural, Renaissance Hollywood Hotel and Spa, Hollywood and Highland

Sometimes late at night I stand on the balcony smoking my pipe, and think deep thoughts about the big issues of course – and I stare at Hollywood off to the east – and above Hollywood the white marble Griffith Park Observatory, floodlit high in the distance. That's cool, but in the middle ground, on a white wall in the middle of Hollywood, a woman is staring back at me. And she's been there for years. So it was time to look into this, and here she is – call her Star Eyes. She's on the east wall of the fancy Renaissance Hollywood Hotel and Spa, advertizing Spa Luce. It seems Spa Luce commissioned Leroy Neiman to create this for them – or someone who could imitate him nicely. No one is saying.

But she's big. Everything is big in Hollywood.

Behind her, Hollywood and Highland, the urban mall built to look like the Babylon set from D. W. Griffith's "Intolerance: Love's Struggle Through the Ages" (1916) – big stuff –
