Monday, August 16, 2010 – Hollywood Ruins

The Hollywood Sign as seen From Selma Avenue

Hollywood is a dissolute place of course – the residue of acute and overwhelming narcissism clogs the streets. You see it in the streets around Sunset and Vine.

At Sunset and Vine – Bette Davis – the mosaic mural by Millard Sheets on the bank building that replaced NBC's 1938 Radio City, the studios that gave America the Jack Benny Show and all the rest.

And Garbo –

And out front, the little angel whispers continually to the naked starlet –

At the Hollywood Athletic Club, founded by Charlie Chaplin, Cecil B. DeMille, and Rudolph Valentino, as a private men's club – and later a hangout for Errol Flynn and Clark Gable – Dick Powell brought the corpse of John Barrymore here for "one last drink" – and here John Wayne liked to toss billiard balls from the roof at passing cars below. It figures.
